Carpenter Ant Damage

Carpenter Ant Damage

The above picture is what is left of a window jam that had carpenter ants nesting in it. Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat the wood where they nest. Instead, they first shred through the wood channeling galleries in which the main nest will reside. Once these channels are big enough to house workers and reproductives, they will hone the wood smooth and keep it clean and well groomed. Carpenter ant damage is easy to spot from other pests. The wood will have channels neatly layered and these channels will be smooth to the touch. There usually is not much frass or sawdust with established nests as most produced will be removed and disposed of away from the nest sight. Termite activity and powder post beetle damage will usually have tell tale signs distinguishing them from carpenter ants. Termites will generally have mud or dirt brought into the wood to make it more comfortable for them to live. Powder post beetle activity usually has a talc-like powder which will be found throughout the wood. Powder post beetle damage creates smaller channels and their feeding will lead them in circular and winding paths. When a nest is located in the window frame, wall void, door frame or any space in or on the home, treating it directly with Drione Dust will prove to be the most effective material to use. Because of it's light cosistency, the dust will penetrate throughout the nest providing quick knockdown, long residual and complete coverage. Since nest sights can be in hard to treat voids, liquid is not the best material to use. You may think you are getting to the deepest confines of the nest, but it is most likely that gravity is pulling much of your material away from critical nest cavities. By missing a section of the nest which is housing either eggs, larva or pupae, your nest will quickly rebound and continue to be a problem. Use Drione for such treatment if you want to do it right.
